Frank Emiro WILL appear in Republican Candidates' Debate

The State Employees' Association of New Hampshire has endorsed SEA member Rep. Frank Emiro in the Republican primary for Governor.

This evening, Frank received word that he will be included in the upcoming candidates' debate, sponsored by the Union Leader and WMUR.

"Frank has been investing shoeleather in this race," said Political Education Committee Chairman Ken Roos. "He has been out meeting voters, one-on-one, and has participated in every other candidates' forum held so far in this race. His campaign isn't about consultants and 'messaging', it's about meeting real people and getting the job done."

Watch Frank in the debate, which will air live on Friday, September 10th, between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm.

SEA Members beat the summer heat with ice cream and conversation with Katrina Swett

A2010-08-31 Katrina Swettt Tuesday's ice cream social at the SEA Office, Katrina Swett talked about her steadfast commitment to defending working class people. If elected, she promised to support legislation that benefits the middle class, and not the Wall Street CEOs who already hold too much power. Swett also thanked the SEA for our endorsement and answered questions from those who had not yet met her.

"I was very impressed with her," said Fred Carlson of Chapter 1, "I really appreciated her talking about keeping jobs here in America and how she would fight against legislation that shipped jobs overseas."

Help show your support for Katrina at an upcoming event, or volunteer to contact other members about why she should be the next Representative for the 2nd Congressional District! Contact Brian Hawkins at bhawkins@seiu1984.org or 271-3411 x120.

A Message from SEA President Gary Smith

Fellow SEA members,

After six years as the president of our great organization, I have decided to not seek re-election at our annual convention in October.

State Executive Branch Members:

1. Look for Your Bargaining Survey!
SEA Chapter Leaders and Field Representatives are now distributing Collective Bargaining Surveys to members covered by the State Executive Branch Agreement. Please take the time to fill out and return your survey. Survey responses provide the Bargaining Team with crucial information about members' priorities, as well as ideas about what the contract could cover in the future.

Please return your survey to the SEA Office before September 30, 2010. Reminder: the SEA Office moved last year -- it is now located at 207 North Main Street, Concord, NH 03301.

2. Bargaining Team Elections to be held next month
The State Employee Executive Branch Bargaining Team will include nine members and two alternate members elected at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 23rd at the Collective Bargaining Senate Meeting at SEA Headquarters. Nominees will be expected to give a short speech (no more than three minutes) at the meeting. Nomination forms are available here. Nomination forms must be returned to the SEA Office by September 3, 2010. More information is available in the August 5th SEA News.

Operation Santa Claus

For the past 50 years, members of the State Employees' Association have gone the extra mile to make sure that New Hampshire's neediest children have presents to open.

Foster children and homeless ones, abandoned toddlers and abused teenagers, boys and girls whose parents died in accidents or from illness, or were killed serving in our armed forces - each year, for the past five decades, Operation Santa Claus has helped give these children a better Christmas.

For more information about the program, please contact Terri Wright at 271-3411 x108 or twright@seiu1984.org.

Also, Sara Laro from our OSC Committee is looking for volunteers who would like to work on a Christmas float for the Concord parade. Do you have a truck, a trailer, time? Would you like your children to participate in our OSC float? Contact Terri Wright and she will be able to put you in touch with Sara.

And do you know someone who received gifts from Operation Santa Claus years ago? If so, please tell us the story. We are especially interested in stories from the 1960's when the State Police delivered gifts for us.

Wall Street Reform Update

money
After a year and a half of partisan wrangling, a majority of Congress -- including our Senator Jeanne Shaheen, and Representatives Carol Shea-Porter and Paul Hodes -- stood up for working families and approved the Wall Street Reform Bill.

Wall Street spent millions lobbying against the bill, while nationwide, public pension funds lost staggering amounts of money to a variety of Wall Street schemes.

Anti-government pundits used the situation to attack public sector pensions and call for pension "reform".  Lost in all the rhetoric was one basic fact:

Wall Street Reform

Why it matters to us, part 2

On June 30, 2007, before the Wall Street meltdown, the NH Retirement System had $5.9 billion in investments.  Two years later, the stock market had lost 37% of its value. NHRS had lost 25% of its investments' value.

Pension fund money that is lost when Wall Street crashes has to be made up somewhere. For NHRS, this "asset loss" was "the primary driver" in this year's increase in employers' contribution rates.

The money NHRS lost in the Wall Street meltdown will come out of state and municipal budgets for a long time to come.
